The facility centres on an 8.5mK base temperature modified Oxford Instruments Proteox MX dilution refrigerator.

What we offer:

There are two experimental payload spaces, one has an 18.5 cm bore and can be threaded by a magnetic field of up to 8 T over a depth of approx 20 cm. This space is mechanically coupled to the fridge’s Mixing Chamber Plate. (The really cold bit). The other space is directly below the Mixing Chamber Plate itself and has a 38 cm bore and a usable depth of at least 15 cm, and is suitable for magnetic field shielding and housing superconducting electronics. The facility has 16 RF lines with 18 GHz bandwidth and 72 low-frequency lines for slow controls and diagnostics. The magnet is a superconducting solenoid also engineered by Oxford Instruments and designed as part of the facility system. Auxiliary equipment such as a vector network analyser, signal sources, a spectrum analyser, and a 14 GHz scope, are also available.

The facility is the only ultra-low-temperature lab in the northeast of the UK, and the only facility nationally to combine a large bore dilution refrigerator with a high magnetic field.

For enquiries about the use of this facility, in the first instance please get in touch with Professor Ed Daw e.daw@sheffield.ac.uk

Schematic of the Sheffield Dilution Refrigerator with the indicated experimental payload spaces.

Funded by STFC as a component of the Quantum Technologies for Fundamental Physics (QTFP) programme and by The University of Sheffield, the facility was opened by Keith Burnett and Koen Lamberts in 2024.
